Hello everyone. I've ordered my John Deere 4300 with R-4 tires. I'd like some advice on something that the dealer suggested. I don't plan to fill the tires with foam nor do I plan to fill them with fluid for ballast. However, I was considering this goop the dealer suggested. Apparently it is something new that will instantly plug a hole up to 1/2 inch in diameter. My salesman said that it was demonstrated to him when he was handed a 1/2 inch punch and a hammer and asked to punch a hole in a tire that was equipped with this goop. The hole in the tire sealed instantly when the goop hit the air. Sorry for the highly technical "goop" term but I don't know what it is really called. Why would I want this? Well, my land is very rocky. Last year I had a flat on a rented Bobcat and it wasn't something I'd like to experience again. That is why this idea came to mind. I also use something like this goop in my ATV. It is routine here in South Texas to run over cactus and so far, it has kept me out of trouble with the ATV. I know that my 4300 tires and the ATV tires are a world apart but I thought the idea sound. Any thoughts you care to share? Thanks!

Peter, there are so many of those products on the market that I don't know which one your dealer is selling. Naturally, some work better than others, but generally I think they're a pretty good idea for areas with cactus and these danged Mesquite thorns like we have around here. Your dealer is probably right. ....

I've never used 'goop' products, nor had a flat for that matter. I believe most of the goops stuff works pretty well. However, I have heard that some, or all, of them can result in an explosive air mixture inside the tire. The directions with some of the products even specify that it's only for emergency repair use. Some tire repair companies won't work on tires where the stuff was used. It might be a good idea to find out who does ag tire work in your area and ask them what products are acceptable. Some dealers don't do tire work ....

TomG, I suppose there could be some exceptions on the market, but as far as I know, none of the "stop leak" type materials that are put into tires to "prevent" flats have any explosive properties. They come in containers from pints to 5 gallon buckets (or possibly larger), require that the valve core be removed to pump them into a deflated tire, and have no propellant of their own. However, the "fix-a-flat" types (in aerosol cans) for use when you have a flat frequently use LPG as a propellant. They come in small pressurized cans to inject into a flat tire without removing the valve core. Those are the ones to avoid. ....

Bird: Yes, I was thinking of the aerosol type. Thanks for the reminder that better products are available. I probably have to do some work in some real rough bush this summer--and me with turfs. Think I'll check a tractor store for a 'goop' product, and also check the area ag tire shop's attitude about these products. ....

Peter, I've never had to use "goop" in my tractor, but have in my kids' bicycles and off-road go-cart--which go most everywhere the tractor goes. Great stuff! I won't hesitate to use it in my tractor when the time comes. I probably should put it in now but am too lazy. Hopefully it won't be difficult at the time. A couple months back there was a thread on this board called "fixing flats" with some great tips for dealing with a flat. Probably the best idea came from Murf ... use a portable compressor to pump the tire up and drive the tractor to your barn or a more civilized repair place. You'll appreciate the thread even if you never get a flat. Best of luck. JonB ....
